When I entered Hamilton College in the fall of 1968, I was determined to be a writer, so I signed up for Haley’s writing course, not knowing what to expect. Haley was eternally grateful for such generous encouragement from the distinguished author.Īlex Haley, whose centenary we mark this year, was my James Baldwin. Only James Baldwin replied, showing up at Haley’s place unannounced one afternoon and chatting with him. In 1959, long before his books “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” and “Roots” made him famous, an aspiring writer named Alex Haley, fresh out of the Coast Guard, wrote to six prominent Black writers in Greenwich Village for pointers on how to break into publishing.

Can you start off by introducing yourself? The book discusses, inter alia, the actors' roles, the props, music and costumes used during the Show and looks at how important emblems and imagery were to these productions. The Show was the concern of the Great Twelve livery companies from the ranks of one of which the Lord Mayor was elected. It highlights the often-overlooked roles of the artificer and those other craftsmen who contributed so valuably to the day's entertainment. This book focuses on the social, cultural and economic contexts, in which the Shows were designed, presented and experienced, and explores the Shows in textual, historical, bibliographical, and archival and other contexts. Pageantry was a feature of the day's entertainment. The London mayoralty was not simply an entity of civic power, but always had its ritual and ceremonial dimensions. The Show was staged annually to celebrate the inauguration of the new Lord Mayor. The London Lord Mayors' Shows were high-profile and lavish entertainments that were at the centre of the cultural life of the City of London in the early modern period. I personally agree with most of this thesis (with the possible exception of the actual scope of such powers, should they exist), and I enjoyed the fictionalization of these ideas in Wilson's novel. Certain individuals are born with a naturally enhanced capacity for this Faculty X, but we can all cultivate this ability through concentration, meditation, and other eastern-ish practices. Wilson's main thesis, if he can be said to have one, is that common man is going about his business in a state of veritable sleepwalking, and that we all have the potential to utilize our Faculty X to expand our consciousness and tap into almost unimaginable psychic powers. Though noticeably long, his treatment of the subject gives you the impression that the book has "earned" its length. With his totally engaging writing style and encyclopedic knowledge (the man must have read literally thousands of books in his life), he leads the reader on a mostly interesting journey through the most notable events and people in the history of the occult. Wilson is one of my favorite writers (his is one of my all-time favorite books), and both his best and worst qualities are on full display in this giant compendium. I love the observation about the shorts, because picture book illustrators make certain concessions for the sake of story, putting reality aside - one of those things is keeping the main character in the same clothing from beginning to end. Bill’s vocabulary lessons don’t just happen when he’s driving.īut other than that, it is all true (sort of). James and Eamon do change their shorts occasionally.Bill and Pam do not have a striped couch.Marla Frazee based this book on real people and real events. “How long do we have to stand here and smile?” asks one of the boys, simultaneously making the joke (to adults) and encouraging (child) readers to open the cover to get on with the adventure. Smile, Baby! You’re On The Cover Of A Picture Book!īut here, Marla Frazee draws us in on the humour of this particular picture book convention (largely outdated now - you’ll find it on classic Little Golden Books). The joke on the cover is, “Who are these boys smiling at?” I have previously noted that when illustrators draw characters as if they’re posing for photographs, this is a form of direct address - sometimes accidental, I’m sure. This is a picture book for kids, but it’s also a picture book for people who have spent many years reading picture books, engaging the adult part of the brain.
